In 1961, while pastoring Calvary Baptist Church in Athens, Georgia, Rev. James W. Brock Sr., along with his wife Frances, felt God’s calling to begin a special ministry. With a heart for young people and a view of the world’s sinful influences, Preacher and Mrs. Brock, with many others knew that God wanted them to do something to meet the needs of the youth of that day. The Lord soon provided a place where they could bring kids for activities and Bible study. It began as a two week Bible camp by renting a portion of the land where the camp now stands. Since 1961, thousands of young people have accepted the Lord as their personal Savior. Little did anyone know, that many, many years later, and many precious souls later, Camp Maranatha would still exist today.
Maranatha is a Greek word used in 1 Corinthians 16:22, which means, “The Lord cometh.” This is the foundation for the camp’s mission of preparing people for the Lord’s return. Everyone who comes to camp has the opportunity to hear the Good News that Jesus Christ died on the cross for their sins. As a help to the local church, the mission of Camp Maranatha is threefold: to win the lost to Christ, to disciple Christians, and to provide Christian fellowship. This is why Camp Maranatha was started, and this is why Camp Maranatha will continue. If you are interested in more information about Camp Maranatha, call (706) 789-3303.
